Although already a qualified ophthalmologist with a string of qualifications to his name (MBBS, DO, MS, FRCS (Edinburgh)), Mr Mathai is committed to continuing his professional development by keeping up to date with the rapid advances in refractive surgery techniques and equipment.
In addition all doctors are subject to undertaking Continued Professional Development (CPD) and annual appraisal, as set out by the General Medical Council (GMC), as part of a system of revalidation. The Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery, introduced by the College in 2007, forms part of this continuous development and demonstrates the surgeon’s competence to continue performing laser eye surgery.
The Certificate not only assesses the surgeon’s clinical and surgical skills, but also patient management, communication skills and attitude and ethics.
Commenting on his latest achievement, Mr Mathai said: “The examination was an enjoyable challenge. I returned with a great sense of satisfaction that our treatment practices and protocols match the standards set by the College.”
