''A lot of our patients ask about safety and I always say that it is very similar to the analogy about travelling in a plane or a car, psychologically most people think that it is more dangerous to be in a plane rather than in a car, but it is quite the reverse!

Dr Doyle continues ''It’s the same with the laser used for the treatment, it is just as safe as wearing contact lenses, if not safer. For for example I’ve performed approximately 25,000 treatments and only encountered one infection, whereas with contact lenses when I was working at the Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester there were many more! Not every contact lens wear will experience a problem, but such percentage can and will get infections. On balance, I always say to patients every surgery has risks but with laser eye surgery they are quite small.''
