Refractive surgery using the excimer laser has, until now, been
focussed on corrections to the dioptic power of the cornea. That
is, the refraction of the patient has been measured and then
entered into the laser system to recreate a spectacle lens on
to the surface of the cornea.
There are a number of disadvantages to this approach: Changing
the shape of the cornea from prolate to oblate (flattened) post
operatively may contribute to less than optimum optical results
including:
-
Higher order visual aberrations.
-
Decreased contrast sensitivity
and hazy vision.
-
Delivering a symmetrical correction
onto an asymmetric cornea leaving post operative irregularity.
-
Unnecessary
removal of tissue.
-
Treatment zones not matched to the pupil in dark
conditions causing haloes in vision.
-
Surgeries planned using software
that does not take into account the corneas shape which provides
78% of the refractive power
of the eyes optical system.
AstraMax topography & AstraPro planning overcome these problems
by accurately measuring the corneal shape and pupil size in different
light levels to determine the optimum treatment.
AstraMax topography & AstraPro treatments planning software
automatically:
-
Optimises the relationship between the optical zone size,
transition zone and tissue removal.
-
Maintains the natural prolate shape
of cornea.
-
Treats irregular and asymmetric corneas as well as regular
refractive errors.
-
Achieves visual performance superior to standard
laser vision correction.
