EPI-LASIK
EPI-LASIK is a new approach to surface corneal
laser treatment that seeks to combine the advantages of surface
treatments (PRK & LASEK) with those of LASIK, whilst avoid
some of the disadvantages of each. It involves lifting the epithelium
with a high precision separator leaving a pristine optical zone
for laser ablation. The EPI-LASIK system preserves the structural
integrity of the stroma, shorten the length of visual recovery
and is expected to minimise discomfort
Its advantages are:
-
The cornea is not cut. The epithelium is lifted
with a blunt edged separator.
-
As a surface treatment
it avoids the risks associated with LASIK, e.g. flap problems
and epithelial ingrowth.
-
No alcohol is required to “soften” the
epithelium. Alcohol used in LASEK may cause stinging and has
the potential
to cause tissue damage.
-
The lifted epithelium remains
viable. In LASEK about 50% of the epithelial cells die following
a typical 30 second exposure to
dilute alcohol.
-
The epithelial sheet in EPI-LASIK
is of better quality that in LASEK. When replaced following
the laser treatment it forms a healthier
protective layer to the cornea and is likely to induce less
of a healing reaction.
-
There is usually less discomfort
following EPI-LASIK than with other forms of surface laser
treatment. The eye is often less disturbed
and more quiet.
-
A better quality epithelium means
less disturbed vision in the few days following treatment,
when compared with PRK & LASEK;
whilst keeping the longer term marginally better quality
of vision that surface treatments may offer over LASIK.
This revolutionary treatment is available at only £995 per
eye.
