Why Now Might Be the Right Time for Laser Vision Correction

Published: 5th Nov 2010

Don't be held back by the fear of eye surgery
People who might be eligible for laser eye surgery to correct vision problems may have been hesitating for a number of different reasons. It is possible that a person has been turned down by an ophthalmologist before because the eyes had not yet matured or they had underlying conditions. Some people are also held back by fear about the results of the procedure and some people are scared off by the price.

Very few people get turned down for laser treatment
Depending on the reason why somebody might have been turned down in the past, they may be able to get laser eye treatment at a later date. There are some underlying conditions that will permanently disqualify you from laser eye surgery like advanced cataracts or glaucoma but there also some that can be addressed. Some people with dry eye syndrome can eventually have laser eye surgery if the problem is rectified.

Fear of eye surgery is common but shouldn't stop you from getting treatment
Fears about the procedure are also common. When you learn a little bit about how it is done and the success rate of Lasik eye surgery, then you will probably be much more comfortable. 97% of cases experience no side effects at all and most of the people who do have mild side effects find that they generally clear up in a matter of days or weeks.

Prices for laser surgery are better than ever
One reason why you might want to consider getting laser eye surgery now is that the price has plateaued over the past couple of years. Because of the downturn in the economy, the ophthalmologists that offer this procedure have kept their prices relatively low. This is not likely to last so it may be in your best interest to get it done before prices go back up.

The whole operation can be done with lasers. No scalpels required
Even though the prices have remained fairly constant, the technology that is used for laser eye surgery continues to advance. There are now options that eliminate the use of a microkeratome to create the flap on the outside of the eye. Some people are more comfortable having a procedure that is done entirely with laser and this is now available. Other advancements in technology have included the ability of the lasers to track small movements in the eye and it meant the number of successful procedures has increased.
