What Determines Whether Laser Eye Surgery Is Successful For You

Published: 1st Nov 2010

Different factors lead to different results from eye surgery
As with any surgical procedure, not every patient is the same and different people can expect different results from laser eye surgery. There are a variety of different factors that influence whether or not you can expect perfect vision following the procedure and also if you are likely to experience side effects.

Your opthamologist can help guide you through the treatment
Probably the most important factor when it comes to successful laser vision correction is the experience of the ophthalmologist. When you go to talk to somebody about having a laser eye treatment, then you should be ready to ask them about their experience. They should have completed somewhere around 400 or 500 procedures in the last two years. Laser eye surgery is something that can be completed on a number of patients during the day so a number that is either much higher or much lower than this might cause concern.

Some conditions may affect the viability of Lasik surgery
Of course, underlying conditions that you have might affect the viability of Lasik eye surgery. Some people have eyes with thick corneas that are not too distorted. In this case, it is reasonable to expect that you will have near perfect vision at the end of the process. If you have a thin cornea you might not be a good candidate for the procedure. If you have an extremely bad case of myopia or hyperopia, then you might not be able to expect perfect vision at the end of the process. You will be able to anticipate vastly improved vision, but you may still have some need for glasses or contact lenses in the future.

Side effects of surgery are uncommon
The presence of side effects from laser eye surgery is actually fairly uncommon. Only about 3% of people who have a laser vision correction procedure experience any kind of side effects. In most cases they are fairly mild and will go away in a few days are few weeks. You can reduce the probability of having side effects by avoiding strenuous exercise for about a week after the procedure and by ensuring that you do not rub your eyes. This can potentially cause damage to the flap that is made on the outside of the eye and replaced after the laser has reshaped the cornea.
