Lasik Eye Surgery - More Than Just Convenient

Published: 18th Oct 2010

There are many reasons why so many people have chosen to undergo laser eye surgery since the introduction of Lasik eye surgery twenty years ago. Not only does it allow most people to set down their contact lenses or eyeglasses for good, but it also is much easier than most people imagine.

Laser surgery can be done in one visit
In many cases, the entire procedure can be completed with just one visit. Prior to this, you'll have a consultation to make sure that you are good candidate. If so, then you simply book an appointment and on the day of your procedure you will go in and be able to go home on the same day.

Drops are used to numb your eyes
Drops are put in the eyes to numb them, and then a flap is pulled back using either an instrument called a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser. A different type of laser called excimer is then used to shape the cornea. It sends short pulses that will remove tissue without causing pain. This part of the process only lasts for a few seconds and then the flap is put back in place.

The lasers cause no pain
The vast majority of people will find that there is no pain involved with laser vision correction. The worst that most people will experience is some mild discomfort as the instrument to remove the flap is put into place. Other than that everything is quite simple. For people who are anxious about the procedure, mild sedatives are available to mitigate the problem.

The results of laser treatment are very quick
One of the best parts of getting a laser eye treatment is first opening your eyes after it has completed. Most people experience an immediate improvement in their vision and after either a few hours or a couple of days in some cases they will find that their vision is nearly perfect. Many patients report that they have better vision than they have ever experienced.

Lasik treatment needn't be expensive
Some people may be concerned about the cost of laser eye surgery but if you compare it to the cost of glasses or contact lenses over a lifetime, it will probably turn out to be a much better deal. That doesn't even take into account the added convenience of never having to worry about these things again.
