Lasik Eye Surgery - Examining the Costs

Published: 2nd Nov 2010

Lasik Surgery need not be expensive
Many people who have been interested in laser eye surgery may have been worried about the expenses associated with this kind of procedure. If you haven't done research into the cost of laser vision correction, then it may be in your best interest to do so now. The current state of the economy has meant that many ophthalmologists have kept their prices at previous levels and those prices may go up in the coming years.

Prices are quoted per eye
Something that you should keep in mind when you are shopping around for a good price for laser eye treatment is that the prices are universally quoted per eye. Most people will need to have the procedure done on both eyes and in fact many will prefer to have them come on the same day.

Prices vary by region
There is certainly a range of different prices when it comes to laser eye surgery. There are different factors that will cause it to be more expensive and you can keep your costs low by choosing certain options. One reality is that different geographical locations have varied prices for laser vision correction. If you live in an area where the average price is high, you may consider traveling outside of the more populated area in order to get the procedure done.

Lasers can be used instead of a microkeratome
There are also different techniques that can make the procedure more expensive. For many years, a microkeratome was used exclusively to create the flap on the outside of the eye to allow the laser to access the cornea. Many ophthalmologists will now choose to use a femtosecond laser and this equipment will likely increase the price that they must charge.

Talk to our opthamologist to see what lazer treatment you might need
There may also be higher costs depending on the kind of procedure that you need. Everybody's eyes are different and your ophthalmologist will be able to counsel you about whether or not your particular needs will cause you to have to pay more.

Total cost of not having treatment can be quite large over time
Something that is very true is that the procedure is often worthwhile for people. When you consider that you will live a much more convenient life with better vision and not have to worry about the expense and time needed to get contact lenses or eyeglasses it will represent a bargain for most people.
