Laser Eye Surgery Continues To Improve

Published: 30th Nov 2009

Laser eye surgery is an excellent option for people who suffer from a variety of different vision problems. Many patients who have hyperopia, myopia or astigmatism will benefit from Lasik eye surgery procedures that will often allow them to get rid of their eyeglasses or contact lenses for good. When it was introduced about 20 years ago, it was already a safe and effective procedure but technological developments have made it even more so.

If you are familiar with the process that is used for laser vision correction, it starts with cutting the flap in the outer surface of the eye. This is done with an instrument called a microkeratome. It is extremely precise, and recent models have made it possible for eye surgeons to create a flap that is extremely uniform in thickness and provides them with a better success rate for the surgical procedure.

The lasers that are used in laser eye treatments have also continued to improve. Many people are worried that they will move their eye during the procedure and that it will therefore not be effective or potentially damage the eye. The lasers can track the small movements of the eye and adjust accordingly so this is really no longer an issue. There are even femtosecond lasers that can be used in place of the microkeratome so that you can have a procedure that is entirely done by laser. Many people prefer this option and feel that it is safer.

Even though the technology continues to improve, the price has remained relatively steady over the past few years. The fact that the economy took a downturn has influenced the prices of laser eye surgery. From 2009 to 2010, the average price of some procedures actually dropped. For this reason, it is wise to investigate the possibility of laser eye surgery to correct vision problems before the prices start to correct themselves.

If you think that you might be a candidate for Lasik eye surgery, book a consultation with an ophthalmologist who can describe the procedure in detail to you. They will let you know if you are eligible and also educate you about the costs and your expectations of the process.
