Is Lasik Eye Surgery An Option For You?

Published: 9th Mar 2010

If you have anything less than perfect vision, then it would be advisable to look into the possibility of laser eye surgery. It has changed the way that many people view the world quite literally and the advancement of technology and availability of qualified surgeons means that you can easily find solutions to your vision problems.

Not everybody is a suitable candidate for laser vision correction. There are certain vision problems that can be corrected with a laser eye treatment and some that cannot. If you have nearsightedness or farsightedness, it is likely that this can be corrected with laser eye surgery. The exceptions include cases where the condition is quite severe. In some cases, astigmatism can also be rectified with laser eye surgery.

There are certain medical conditions that will prevent you from being a candidate. If you have ever had a herpes infection in your eye, this will mean that you are not eligible. Laser eye surgery can potentially reintroduce the presence of an infection and ophthalmologists will not proceed with Lasik eye surgery in these cases. Cataracts may also present a problem and glaucoma may prevent you from being able to get the surgery. There are some conditions like dry eye syndrome that can be treated prior to surgery but the ophthalmologist will indicate to you that it must be controlled prior to the procedure.

There also some conditions that cannot be corrected with laser eye surgery. In the case of presbyopia, this is an inability of the muscles of the eye to properly focus on objects close to the eyes. Therefore, it is not something that can be fixed with a laser.

Everybody's situation is different, and if you believe that you might be eligible for Lasik eye surgery it is something that is worthwhile investigating. You can book an appointment with an ophthalmologist to discover whether or not you are a good candidate and they will also be able to describe to you what you can expect following the procedure. If you are worried about cost, you can also discuss options with them that may include financing laser eye surgery over a period of time.
