How long before laser eye surgery do I have to stop wearing contact lenses?

Published: 8th Dec 2011

You do need to refrain from wearing contact lenses prior to having laser eye surgery. In fact, you need to refrain from wearing them to have your suitability determined at your consultation.

The length of time you mustn't wear your contact lenses for does vary based on the type of lenses that you use. If you are a soft daily contact lens wearer, then you ought to not wear your lenses for at least three full days prior to your consultation and for the same period of time prior to your treatment.

If you are a soft extended wear contact lens wearer (the type you sleep in), then you ought to not wear your lenses for at least seven full days prior to your consultation and for the same period of time prior to your treatment.

If you are a hard / gas permeable contact lens wearer, then you ought to not wear your lenses for at least four weeks prior to your consultation and for the same period of time prior to your treatment.

It is always best to check this out when you ring to make your appointment as the rules do vary based on the type of lenses that you wear, coupled with your pattern of wear.

As contact lenses do slightly warp the front surface of your eyes, it is very important to abide by the recommend time for not wearing them to allow the surface of your eyes to relax and go back to their true shape.
