Getting Over Your Fears about Laser Vision Correction

Published: 10th Nov 2010

Talk to someone who's had laser eye surgery done
If you talk to people who have had laser eye surgery, you will generally hear the same kind of feedback from them. It is something that they do not regret at all and they have found that they have far more freedom than they once did. You will also hear from people that it is not a painful process and that the recovery time is actually very fast.

What about the laser?
It is understandable that many people worry about having a laser pointed directly at their cornea. It's not only that, but the fact that the ophthalmologist must make a cut in the outside of the eye to create the flap is something that worries many people. The instrument that is traditionally used to do this is called a microkeratome and it is extremely precise. All you'll feel during this part of the procedure is a small amount of pressure on the eye. There are even some clinics that can do the entire procedure using different lasers although either method is extremely safe.

How does the laser work?
When it comes to the laser that is used to adjust the shape of the cornea, this is called an excimer laser. Short pulses from laser will remove small amounts of tissue. Many people are surprised to find that this part of the process only takes about 10 or 15 seconds and then a flap is put back in place. It will act as natural bandage and tends to heal very quickly.

What are the side effects of laser eye treatments?
When it comes to side effects of a laser eye treatment, these are rather uncommon. Only a small percentage of people experience any kind of side effects at all and in most cases these are quite mild. Sensations like the halo effect when viewing bright lights in low-light conditions and foreign body sensation are sometimes present. These generally go away within a few days.

The more you learn about laser eye surgery and look at the statistics, the more comfortable you will feel. It is something that has the potential to change your life dramatically and once you have had it done you will be amazed at the clarity of your vision.
