Does The Prospect Of Laser Eye Surgery Scare You?

Published: 2nd Feb 2010

If you are concerned about Lasik eye surgery, then it is advisable to learn a little bit more about it. The chances are that understanding the procedure and the risks associated with laser vision correction will make you feel much more comfortable. Laser eye surgery is actually very safe and the incidence of complications following the surgery is generally quite low.

In terms of numbers, only about 3% of people that have laser eye surgery experience complications. Many of these are not severe and can include things like a halo effect where rings are seen around bright objects that are viewed at night. Other possibilities can include a dry eyes or mild irritation. Only 1% of people that receive laser eye surgery treatments experience serious complications. These can generally be corrected with follow-up visits. One thing that you should not be concerned about is going blind from laser eye surgery; it has never happened before.

Some people are worried that the laser eye treatment will be painful. The vast majority of people find that there is very little pain associated with this type of procedure. In fact, most people would characterize the feeling as mild discomfort. You will be awake for the entire procedure and many people do not require medication at all. Some people who are particularly anxious may be prescribed mild sedatives to alleviate the problem.

Something that might scare away a number of potential candidates for laser eye surgery is the cost. If you consider that the cost of the procedure is a one-time fee and that you will likely not have to purchase eyeglasses or contact lenses again, it may actually end up being cheaper to have laser vision correction. If you think that you will not be able to pay for the entire cost of the procedure up front, you might inquire about financing plans that are available through certain clinics.

Do not let your fears rob you of the convenience and the feeling of freedom that you will get when you have successful laser eye surgery. Once the procedure is complete, you will certainly be glad that you learned more about it and improved the quality of your life.
